The Joseph Horn Family Braves The Civil War
Joseph Horn born 26 May 1830 and Ruth Box Sims born 2 May 1833 were married in Tennessee. From there they moved to Missouri, made one crop and planned their final move to Arkansas. It was an extremely cold winter that year and they were able to take their ox drawn wagon across the Arkansas River on the ice. They settled about Two and one half miles southwest of Ellsworth, in Johnson Co. Ar. one mile south and west of the present town of Midway, now in Logan Co. Ar. They built a double dog trot house with two hallways which stood untill the 1930's. They had barely made their home there when the Civil War started. In 1860 Joseph Horn joined the Union Army and spent most of his service as a cook in the Union Hospital at Little Rock,Ar. Durning the war the Bushwhackers wouldn't leave the Horn family alone. One day when Ruth was sitting on the front porch churning, they came by and shoved a cat into her full churn of milk. At other times they would kill her chickens or make her do it and she would have to cook for the outlaws. The bushwhackers would take whatever they wanted or could find. One bushwhacker stole Joseph's horse. When he [ Joseph ] returned home from the war he took his gun and went to the bushwhackers home to either " kill or be killed". He brought his horse home.
Joseph lived untill 1895 and Ruth recived a Civil War pension, addressed to Ruth Box Horn. untill her death in 1925. Both Joseph and Ruth were buried in the family cemetery on the old Horn home place.
Many of the Horn and Sims descendents still live in Logan Co. and surrounding Counties of Arkanasas

News article written by John R. Kennemer of Woodville,Ala.[ son of John B. Kennemer ]
Old Settler Dies At Woodville
Thomas Sims buried in historic Ashburn Cem.in what is now Marshall Co. Ala. Nov 7th.
The article states he was born Aug 3 in early 1800's one mile west of Bucksnort, on Gunters mountain before Marshall Co,Ala was created. His mother was Rhoda House and his father was William Sims.who helped collect and carry the Cherokee Indians west of the Mississippi River from 1836 to1838. Thomas never needed a pair of glasses to read, He was a great hunter and marksman. Once he bought 30 cents worth of ammunition and with this, shot 29 shot's and killed 28 turkeys. He was in shooting matches with great marksmen like Bunt Peters and Frank Cotten . He was a champion walker and could walk 16 miles in a day. He was an expert with an axe, he helped build the bridge across the Paint Rock River for the Memphis and Charleston railroad in Jackson Co. He was in the Civil War drafted in the Confederate Calavery in 1862 and served under Capt. Henry Smith and while in this service [ he was a expert horseman] he rode a horse across the Tennessee River five times , twice in West Tennessee and three times in Alabama. In 1864 he joined Capt. John B. Kennemer's Union Scouts and Guides. He lived his life in Alabama except for two years spent in Indiana where his first wife Matilda Mays is buried. He returned with three young children to Alabama and married Sarah A. Davis with whom he lived 57 years untill her death.
There was more in the article but I hit the highlights. It also said he had been to Nashville,Tenn

3rd Tn. Mtd. Inf. Regt. USA Casualties
John H. Cagle of Co. E was killed in action by confederates at Lee's Ferry in Anderson Co. on 6 Sept. 1864. Thomas Glenn Boyd of Sweetwater obtained a pension for his ( Cagle ) widow and then, when the substitute muster roll of Capt. Golman Bryson's company was made up by Tom Boyd, he fraudulently entered the name of Cagle on the roll, but changed the name to James Cagle, However an alert clerk in the pension office prevented any payment of duplicate in this case. Tom Boyd was subsequently indicted some 30 times for fraud against the USA.

Fort Bowman
The stone house to the south is Ft.Bowman, or Harmany Hall, built abt. 1753 for George Bowman, who emigrated from Pennsylvinia in 1731-1732. The house is an important example of the Pennsylvinia German influence on Shenandoah valley architecture. There was born Maj. Joseph Boman, second in command in Gen.George Rogers Clark's expendition for the conquwst of the Revolutionary War. Among those buried in the Bowman Cemetery nearby are Joseph Bowman's brother,Capt.Isaac Bowman. There are two stories about Joseph Bowman:: Forgotten Hero and The Forgotten Long Knife. GREAT READING !!!!.
